Stranger Things season 3 ending explained
Eleven loses her powers
At the conclusion of episode 7, The Bite, Eleven discovers that when the Mind-Flayer bit her leg, it infected her bod with a piece of itself.
As a result of this bite, Eleven was left without her psychokinetic powers, meaning she is just as powerless as her friends in the fight against the Mind-Flayer.
What happens to Billy?
Now the controlled acolyte of the evil Mind-Flayer from the Upside Down, Billy served the monster in its terrorizing of Hawkins.
In the climactic episode The Battle of Starcourt, all of our heroes from Hawkins managed to unite against the Mind-Flayer, but Billy manages to keep them in the vicinity of the shopping mall when they try to escape.
Hope seemed lost for Eleven when Billy captured her and she no longer has her powers, but that all changes when she reminds him of his happy memories of his mother that she had witnessed when exploring his mind previously.
This emotional cue prompts Billy to break free from the Mind-Flayer's control and turn on the monster long enough for Eleven to get to safety.
Sadly, as a result, Billy is killed protecting Eleven.
As he lays dying after the Mind-Flayer is defeated, Billy shares a moment of reconciliation with step-sister Max.
The explosion
Underground, Hopper is forced to fight with the Russian assassin - whose motives are ambiguous but undoubtedly sinister - and manages to defeat him.
However, when Joyce sets of the explosion that cuts off the portal to the Upside Down - and cuts off the Mind-Flayer's body from its mind - Hopper is seemingly killed in the explosion.
The pair share a look of emotional recognition and acceptance for what is about to happen, but Hopper is emotional and satisfied that they will succeed in saving Hawkins.
Three Months Later
Eleven's abilities have not returned but Mike is confident that they will return.
Joyce has adopted Eleven after Hopper's death, but the Byers family are moving out of Hawkins for a new home elsewhere.
The gang bid an emotional farewell to Joyce, Jonathan, Will, and Eleven. Nancy and Jonathan emotionally part, while Eleven says goodbye to Mike after telling him she loves him.
Eleven also reads a speech from Hopper and cries - a lot.
The Byers family depart Hawkins.
End credits scene
In a mid-credits scene, Stranger Things 3 takes us to a top-secret facility in Kamachatka, Russia.
With plans to leave "The American" in his cell, a guard drags down Alexei from earlier in the season down to a cage underground.
Opening the cage, we see a Demogorgon.
What are the Russians planning to do with the Upside Down?
So who is dead?
Out of the main characters, Billy Hargrove is definitely dead after his last redemptive act.
It also appears that Sheriff Jim Hopper is dead, however, due to the ambiguity of there being no remains seen and reference to the Russians holding an "American" in their prison, could Hopper have survived and ended up a prisoner?
We sure hope so.
Stranger Things 3 is available on Netflix.
